Works GP Background:
So far has the MINI brand strayed from the die cast during its initial relaunch that it seems hard to imagine the scene that the first Mini Works GP was launched into in 2006. The feisty, lightweight and super-agile R53 Mini had become the darling of the tuning scene and every day another remap, small supercharger pulley conversion and suspension kit was released. The Cooper S chassis could handle plenty of power and had all the ingredients to make an effective trackday car, and the aftermarket was making a fortune exploiting that potential. This, the Works GP, was its solution, it didn’t concern itself too much with huge headline power figures. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder supercharged engine got a small boost over the John Cooper Works kit to 215bhp at 7100rpm and 184lb ft at 4600rpm, but the magic was in the lightweighting and the chassis. Andreas Decher, leader of the chassis validation team, wasn’t shy about their efforts. ‘Think of it as a baby M-car,’ he said. ‘Maybe even a CSL.’
Out went the rears seats, in their place a large metal brace cum luggage restraint behind the front seats. There were unique aluminium control arms for the rear suspension (saving 7.5kg per side) and lighter wheels (2kg per corner), contributing to a weight saving of 50kg and a total of just 1090kg. Suspension was 10mm lower and retuned, while the deeper splitter, extended side sills and carbon fibre rear spoiler created a bit of downforce, too. People questioned the £22,000 price tag at the time, but limited to just 2000 units and with so much proper engineering thrown at the ‘baby CSL’, the extra £2880 it commanded over a regular Cooper S Works seems pretty decent value.
Built in 2006 to UK Specification #1019 was registered on 01/09/06 on the then brand-new 56 plate by Robert Stern official BMW MINI dealers to the lucky first keeper who had managed to grab one of the hugely desirable 500 UK allocations. However, shortly afterwards with just 2000 miles the impracticality of just two seats proved too much and the vehicle was sold to long term mini and MINI enthusiast Mr Cooper to be part of his small collection. Despite his affinity for the brand he had been unable to secure a new build slot so was relieved to get his hands on a low mileage example. He then added the private registration GP56DAV that is included in the sale.
Mr Cooper would then cosset car #1019 for the next 14 years, firstly maintaining it with MINI under the TLC scheme and then diligently servicing it himself after MINI’s servicing failed to live up to his expectations. This was done way over recommendation at approx. every 2k and always using genuine MINI Filters and Mobil 1. #1019 has just had an advisory free MOT and health check at Bowker MINI Preston. As a lifelong fan, enthusiast and Cooper namesake he also added a number of genuine MINI and Cooper Works accessories including the official MINI Nav, front and rear dash cams, rubber mats aero grill (not fitted) and sun blinds
In incredible condition with a long term fastidious mature owner and a documented service history it really is as good as it gets. The car is supplied with all booklets and instructions in the original silver-grey book pack including the original MINI Works Certificate. The history file is comprehensive with invoices to support the service stamps and the old MOT’s further validating the mileage. We also have the original GP brochure, works brochure, works and MINI accessories brochures and even communications between Mr Cooper and John Cooper Works predating the launch such was his enthusiasm. All 3 keys are present along with the supplying dealer keyrings. The tools and even the jacking point blocks are all present.
Evidently having always been garaged the Thunder blue/grey metallic paint is in fantastic order throughout with perfect factory shut lines and a deep glossy finish. The contrast Pure Silver roof is equally perfect and still carries the factory build number decal. The 18inch diamond cut alloys are totally unmarked and fitted with brand-new factory correct matching Bridgestone runflats. The Factory bodystyling, spoiler, bumpers, headlights (both originals and uprated LED versions are included), badges and decals are all correct and free from any damage or discoloration. This really is a cosseted time warp car
Engine Bay and Underneath:
Perhaps even more remarkable than the incredible condition of the paint work and trim is the underside of the vehicle. It could easily have just rolled straight off the factory floor, with factory wax and markings still in place it is an incredible testament to the care this GP has received. The engine bay is equally impressive and spotlessly clean. Whilst the mapping etc remain standard some high quality sensible upgrades have been integrated into the otherwise stock engine bay. The R53 suffer from coolant tanks splitting with age so an upgraded hand made in the UK by Davefab in black anodised aluminium has been added. A black GP logo strut brace has also been added and an ITG lifetime filter. All of the above can be returned to standard prior to collection should you wish.
The interior is a fabulous place to reside. The stunning heated black leather Recaro sports seats with red contrast stitch perfectly co-ordinating with the stunning exterior colours. All the switch gear is in perfect working order and the leather and carpets are unmarked. The carpets are still protected by genuine MINI rubber over mats. The boot area also has a genuine rubber mat and is effectively unused with absolutely no signs of loading damage or wear whatsoever.
On the Road:
Perhaps unsparingly given the low miles and impeccable upkeep it drives with a time warp tautness you that you could only find with a low mileage perfectly maintained example. The GP Boasts 215bhp with a kerb weight of 1090kg giving 200bhp per tonne and respectable claimed 0-60mph time of 6.5 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 149mph. Where the GP truly stands proud from the rest of the R53 range is the handling and sense of occasion, the reduced weight and sound deadening make a huge difference on the road especially coupled with the JCW sports suspension, brakes and limited slip diff. It offers a superb visceral driving experience that many more modern and often vastly more powerful cars simply cannot replicate.
With just 25,600 miles, one long term fastidious mature owner and an impeccable service history this vehicle really stands out among its often thrashed and previously damaged peers. Its condition is best described as time warp. The exterior and interior are quite simply superb. The wheels are absolutely as new and wear a brand new set matching factory correct Bridgestone runflat tyres. On the road this GP is superb and drives with in a way that you that you could only find with the very best, lowest mileage and perfectly maintained examples.
The vehicle has just undergone a full Main Dealer Health Check and MOT and will be serviced by SMC prior to collection for complete peace of mind
