Mercedes-Benz TE Series
SMC Heritage are proud to present one of our favourite vehicles of all time the W123 Mercedes, or S123 to give it its correct title in this instance. This incredible 200T Manual has only covered 66,000 Miles and has been in the custody just 2 owners from new.
The Mercedes W123 Series of cars, sold from 1976 to 1985, was the most successful selling Mercedes range ever with 2.7 million sold worldwide. Saloons, Estates and Coupes were offered with both petrol and diesel engines. They are now revered worldwide for their timeless good looks and bullet proof longevity. In 1977 at the Frankfurt motor show Mercedes unveiled its first “official” estate car the 123 Wagon. This marked the birth of the truly prestigious estate car genre that both BMW and Audi would later join and that 40 years later is still very much dominated by the Germans.
The public of both Europe and the US lapped them up with demand far outstripping supply. However, Mercedes Benz decided not to sell the model in the UK, deeming that limited sales would not justify the cost of building RHD examples. Fortunately, Mercedes Benz UK’s Marketing Manager, Jonathan Ashman lobbied hard for the S123 to be brought to the UK believing it to be a golden opportunity for the marque. Eventually Stuttgart would acquiesce to his plans and the model was launched in the UK in the Autumn of 1979. Despite the 10% premium over the saloon the wagon was a huge hit and waiting lists where huge right upto the end of production. A total of 199,517 S123’s where delivered before production ceased in 1986 accounting for just 8% of the 123 Ranges production.
Built in early 1983 by the Mercedes Bremen plant this 200T Estate is finished in Light Ivory (623U) paintwork with contrasting Blue Cloth (052) interior. It was registered new on the 23/03/1983 by Puttocks Mercedes Benz of Surrey. Initially registered to Deminex UK Oil and Gas Ltd, the director of which would keep the vehicle until 2007. Firstly, in the company name and then from 1984 onwards in his own name. The vehicle would then stay fairly local being sold to a lady in Pinner who would keep in another 13 years right through to 2020.
With just 2 drivers in 37 years and in absolute time warp condition it really is as good as it gets. The car is supplied with all booklets and instructions in the original leather file including the stamped service book. We have an extensive history file filled with invoices old MOTs and even the original AA cards. The rear window still proudly bares the Puttocks supplying dealer sticker. One of the keys still resides in the leather cover and there is even the original dealer keyring. The tools are all present and we even have the genuine Mercedes cross bars for the roof bars complete with keys

Evidently having always been garaged the light ivory paintwork is in fantastic order throughout with no signs of rust on the arches or the jacking points. The panel gaps and shut lines are perfect. The chrome work is unmarked and the colour matched period wheel trims are unmarked. The classic ivory colourway is both elegant and timeless and really emphasis the elegant lines of the 123T.
The interior whilst a little spartan by modern standards is a fabulous place to reside. The blue cloth seats are almost as new and unworn, the spring bases are refreshingly still taught yet comfortable unlike many of the 123s on the market. The carpets have been protected from new by genuine Mercedes ribbed over mats. The Zebrano wood trim is complete and undamaged. Pleasingly the period Blaupunkt radio is still present and functional. The load area is again complete and undamaged with no obvious sign of loading use. Having lived the cosseted highlife, unlike many 123 wagons this example has clearly never suffered the indignity of becoming a budget tip and or dog mobile.
With just 66,000 miles on a vehicle renowned for its longevity its condition is best described as time warp. The exterior and interior are quite simply superb.
On the road this W123 drives with all the smoothness and fluidity you that you only find with low mileage perfectly maintained examples. As a post 1980 car this 200t is fitted with the later M102 engine rather than the elderly asthmatic M115 motor with is origins in the Ponton era. The crossflow M102 went on to power both the 190 and w124 so parts are more readily available although as is the norm with Mercedes’ of this era seldom required. The M102 engine coupled with the manual box in this car is a reliable, economical and surprisingly sprightly combination.
If you are looking for one of the best, most attractive and original examples of the legendary W123 Mercedes you need to see this car it offers a fantastic entry in to modern classic ownership. As either a depreciation proof low mileage daily driver, a weekend toy to polish, show and enjoy or perhaps most likely a solid investment piece to add to your collection
The vehicle will be MOT’d and fully service by SMC Heritage prior to collection for complete peace of mind
