About the Land Rover Series IIA:
The SII was launched in 1958 and replaced by the SIIA in 1961. The SIIA had a much longer tenure and would continue in production until 1971 and the launch of the new SIII. In reality the differences between SII and SIIA are very difficult to distinguish. There were of course some minor cosmetic changes but the biggest change was not until 1969 when the headlamps moved into the wings on all models, and the sill panels were redesigned to be shallower a few months afterwards.
The Series IIA is considered by many to be the hardiest series model constructed. It is also, for most people the model that springs to mind as the definitive classic Land Rover. Mainly thanks to its many appearances in popular films, series and television documentaries over the years.
It was certainly a roaring sales success and by Land Rovers twentieth birthday in 1968 total production was just short of 600,000, of which more than 70% had been exported. The Series IIA was central to this and was still in production when sales reached their peak in 1969–70. That year over 60,000 Land Rovers where sold. Thanks to record sales, Land Rover dominated many world markets, for example in Australia in the 1960s Land Rover held 90% of the 4×4 market. This figure was repeated in many countries in Africa and the Middle East.
The vehicle has recently undergone a photo documented labour of love restoration including a bare metal, glass out respray inside and out in the factory Bronze Green finish. The interior has also been retrimmed and a brand-new Khaki canvas roof completes the look. The underside of this car is as clean as the top, it’s a credit to the former keeper and their diligent restoration and maintenance.
Post restoration the vehicle has remained garaged and covered and is consequently in stunning condition with its deep glossy paint and taught shut lines. The period double bumpers, lights and those oh so important badges are all correct and free from any damage or discoloration. The canvas is brand-new and fits beautifully. The steel wheels are also freshly refinished in body colour and shod with matching Michelin tyres. You could confidently set about eating your dinner from the underside, it is that clean
The interior is a fabulous place to reside with a real period feel. When you sit in this car you are transported straight back to the early 1960’s. The front seats have been retrimmed and the switch gear is correct, undamaged and fully functional. The rear seats are also retrimmed to match the fronts. Having been stored post restoration the painted floors and boot area are also totally unmarked
Equally at home in the Yorkshire Dales, The Kings Road or Padstow it really is quite remarkable. On the road it drives fantastically with a pureness and simplicity that simply can’t be matched by modern vehicles, its really easy to see why these series cars have such an enthusiastic following. So little horse power has never been so much fun!
If you are looking for one of the best, most attractive and original examples of the legendary SIIA Land Rover at a sensible price point you really need to see this car. It offers a fantastic entry in to modern classic ownership. As either a fun, depreciation proof low mileage daily driver, a weekend toy to polish, show and enjoy or perhaps most likely a solid investment piece to add to your collection
The vehicle will be MOT’d and fully service by SMC Heritage prior to collection for complete peace of mind
