Alpina B3 3.3 Background
In December 1998, at the Birmingham Autoshow, the prototype for the E46 was presented by Alpina. It was equipped with the engine of the B3 3.2.
At the Geneva motorshow in 1999, Alpina introduced their production variant of the E46 Saloon– the B3 3.3, followed by the coupe at the Frankfurt 1999 Motorshow followed by the Touring version the Geneva Motorshow in 2000 and lastly the convertible followed at the 2000 Autoshow in Birmingham.
The B3 3.3 engine is based on the S52B32 engine from the US-spec E36 M3 3.2 with 240 hp. The cylinder head and the single-VANOS system have more in common with the BMW M50 engine than any M-engine, with a regular M50 intake and hydraulic valve lifters. Alpina increased the bore to 86.4mm as well as a longer stroke (94mm). The cylinder head is tuned in traditional fashion as well a new exhaust manifold. Extremely light pistons as well as a newly developed crankshaft have been used in conjunction with a new torsional-vibration damper, sustaining permanent revs of up to 7200 rpm with ease. The engine produces 280 bhp at 6100 rpm and a torque of 335 Nm at 4300 rpm. The standard gearbox is a Getrag six-speed unit, optionally a five-speed Switch-Tronic box is available.
The suspension has been uprated with stiffer springs and modified dampers. Tires are Michelin Pilot Sport, 225/40 ZR18 at the front and 255/35 ZR18 at the rear.
The B3 3.3 uses 330i disks and calipers, with upgraded brake pads.
Alpina claims a 0-100 km/h time of 5.7 seconds for the manual and 6.8 for the Switch-Tronic version. The top speed is more than 265 km/h. However, Auto Motor und Sport´s test shows that the B3 is even faster knocking almost a quarter of a second of those times.

Offered with low miles supported by a fully documented ownership and service record plus a huge array of invoices for maintenance this really a fantastic example.
The history file is simply staggering with north of 5 figures in maintenance and restoration including a full glass out respray in 2020 with genuine front wings, bonnet and bootlid. We have all the old MOTs on file, old tax discs and reminders, various communications from BMW including approved used purchase invoices, extended warranties and recalls and even a spreadsheet documenting every penny of the running costs for one of the owners.
B3 #40 is also supplied with all booklets and instructions in the original book pack, road tests and magazine pre dating the purchase, the period Alpina price list, option list and Sytner brochure for the 2000 Birmingham Motorshow. All 4 keys are still present along with the Alpina leather keyring
Having under gone a complete glass out respray the iconic Alpina Blue metallic paint is incredible with a deep glossy shine. The body is totally free from any dents and the panel gaps are even and totally original. This is further complimented by a period Alpina decal kit. The Alpina specific spoilers and trim are all present and totally immaculate. Pleasingly the iconic genuine Alpina specific wheels are totally original, unmarked and fitted with matching Michelin tyres. To preserve the finish the vehicle has been professionally ceramic coated
Under the bonnet:
The engine bay is equally as impressive as the bodywork, totally standard and spotlessly clean. It is an incredible testament to the care this E46 has received.
The interior is a fabulous place to reside with factory electric memory sports seats in upgraded Buffalo Alpina leather finished in black with the traditional Alpina contrast stitch and logos. The seats, carpets and mats are all in fantastic condition with very little sign of use. The steering wheel has been professionally retrimmed in Alcantara but maintaining the Alpina contrast stitch and switchtronic logos. The boot area is also in fantastic order having been protected by new by a genuine Alpina over mat, the carpets are unmarked and the plastic liners free from damage or scuffs. The toolkit complete and unused
On the Road:
Perhaps unsparingly given the phenomenal history and low mileage it drives with a time warp taught fluidity you that you could only find with a low mileage perfectly maintained example. I purchased this vehicle from a collector in Scotland along with a Mercedes 190e Cosworth and on the 240 mile trip home it performed absolutely faultlessly. The B3 offers a superb driving experience that many modern and often vastly more powerful cars simply cannot replicate. In Autocar’s period road test Alistair Weaver summed it up perfectly when he said
“Few cars, at any price, are as talented as this new Alpina”
Evo Magazine concurred stating that even the basic E46 had and I quote:
“the most adjustable chassis since the E30 M3”
In incredible condition with freshly restored paintwork and having covered just 3850 documented miles per annum #40 offers a fantastic entry in to modern classic ownership. As either a depreciation proof low mileage daily driver, a weekend toy to polish, show and enjoy or perhaps even a solid investment piece to add to your collection.
Whether you are looking for the very best example of a truly limited production run performance BMW or just looking for a shrewd future classic investment then you need to see this car.
The vehicle will be MOT’d and receive a full service and health check by our local BMW Specialist prior to collection for complete peace of mind
